Postgraduate Research Opportunity in Plasma Physics

A postgraduate research position is available with the Plasma Data Analysis Group at the Physics Department, University College Cork on the following topic:

Investigation of spectral line ratio dependence on plasma parameters in a magnetic mirror plasma experiment

The aim of the research is to utilize the information provided by  the ratio of spectral line intensities as a  proxy for electron temperature and density measurements. In the case of helium, this offers a valuable diagnostic resource  for determining Te and Ne in the scrape-off layer of a fusion reactor. The main focus of the project will involve experimental work on a Double Plasma machine and modelling of the acquired spectroscopic and Langmuir probe data.

The project is supported by the European Union 7th Framework Programme on Fusion Energy Research. The successful applicant may initially register for a Masters (MSc)  degree with optional progression to a PhD after one year. The PhD studentship will be awarded for a maximum of three years with a total annual value of 20,000 euro (including fees).

Applicants should have a  good honours degree in physics and have an aptitude for experimental work and data analysis using relevant computer packages. Prior knowledge of plasma physics, while desirable, is not essential.

The  closing date (extended) for applications is 15 December 2008.
