[SFI Logo] Nonlinear Dynamics and Quantum Optics for Photonic Applications

The aim of the research proposal is to investigate the non-linear and quantum physics of semiconductor lasers and to develop concepts and understanding which may enable new technologies in classical and quantum information processing and computing. We will build on our expertise to analyse key issues in the performance of existing devices such as high power semiconductor lasers toward the realisation of new types of semiconductor lasers such as diode ring laser, semiconductor lasers arrays or micro-cavity semiconductor resonators. The strong synergy between theory and experiment inherent in our team will enable us to identify novel experiments to demonstrate the key concepts in the emerging technologies of classical and quantum information processing and computing.

European Comission, DOTCOM Project

[DOTCOM Logo] Quantum Dots for Communication

The central objective of the DOTCOM project is the development of innovative quantum dot lasers and amplifiers based on GaAs quantum dot wafer technology. To fabricate high quality quantum dots for 1300 nm and 1500 nm emission wavelength in a controlled and reproducible manner the MBE and MOCVD materials technologies will be employed. They are to be assessed with respect to reliability, market applicability and environmental friendliness. The project is being carried out by the following universities and companies:

[VISTA Logo] VCSELs for Communication

Opto-electronics will have to play a crucial role in future development of communications and information processing and, as a consequence, will influence very much our society in the next years. The Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSEL) are likely to become much more important than standard semiconductor lasers in the near future in opto-electronic devices.
